EJECTOR PUMP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

MAS Plumbing: Chicagoland’s trusted expert for ejector pumps.

If you have a question about your ejector pump system, we have the answer. And if your pump needs replacement or service, we have a team of licensed plumbers to do the job right.

A sewage ejector pump sits in a sealed pit below the floor level of your basement and collects wastewater from basement fixtures like toilets, sinks, showers, and washing machines. Once the waste reaches a certain level, the pump kicks on automatically and pushes everything upward to the main sewer line.

Ejector pumps are not the same as sump pumps. Sump pumps handle groundwater seepage along the permitter or your basement or crawl space areas. Sewage ejector pumps handle actual household waste, both liquid and solid, generated from your plumbing fixtures located below the elevation of your main sewer line. Most systems include a check valve to prevent anything from flowing back in the wrong direction.

Not every home requires one. If all of your plumbing fixtures sit above the main sewer outlet your home would not likely require a ejector pump. However, if you have any plumbing fixtures located below the elevation of your sewer line, an ejector pump is a requirement.

This typically applies to homes with a basement bathroom, kitchen, laundry area, or utility sink. However, this may also apply to properties built on uneven terrain where elevation differences affect how waste flows out. If your home sits lower than the street level or your sewer lateral exits at a higher point than your fixtures, an ejector pump is what allows waste to leave your home safely and without backing up.

Similar to how a sump pump works, when wastewater enters the basin, a float switch rises with the water level and automatically triggers the pump to turn on. An ejector pump however also macerates or grinds the waste and pushes it through a discharge line connected to the main sewer pipe.

Most residential pumps handle solids up to about two inches. The discharge lines need to be sealed and vented to prevent sewer gases from escaping, and a check valve keeps waste from flowing back into the pit once it has been pumped out.

The float switch is really the heart of the system. If it sticks or fails, the pump will not activate and a backup becomes likely. Improper venting or an incorrect pipe slope can also cause slow drainage or persistent odors that are difficult to trace.

Like any mechanical system, ejector pumps can develop issues over time. Most pumps depending on use last around 7 to 10 years. The most common issues include pump failure, which causes waste to back up into and possibly out of lowest drain in your home, a stuck float switch that prevents the pump from turning on, clogs in the discharge line, odors from poor venting or trapped waste, and electrical issues like a tripped breaker that shuts the whole system down.

Backup in a lower level draining is usually the most obvious sign something is wrong, but gurgling drains or occasional odors are often early warning signs worth paying attention to before a bigger problem develops.

Any of these signs is worth addressing quickly. Catching an issue early almost always means a simpler and less expensive fix.

1. Water backing up. Water backing up out of the floor, basement toilets or drains that are slow or overflowing are a clear red flag that something is wrong. The line may be clogged, but usually it’s an indicator the ejector pump is not working.

2. Unusual noises. Grinding, clanking, or buzzing coming from the pump is often a sign of motor or impeller trouble.

3. Frequent cycling. If the pump is turning on and off more than it should, the float switch or control panel may be starting to fail.

4. Odor near the pit. A persistent smell around the basin usually points to trapped waste or a damaged vent line.

5. Alarm activation. Many systems are equipped with an audible or visual alarm that goes off when a problem is detected.

Currently experiencing a problem or would like to replace your current pump? We service the near northwest and western suburbs of Chicago, including towns like Streamwood, Elgin Arlington Heights, and beyond. Give us a call at 630-924-0665.

Most residential ejector pumps last between seven and ten years with proper care. It may be time to replace yours sooner if it runs constantly without pumping, clogs frequently despite regular maintenance, leaks from the seals, or requires repeated service calls.

If you are planning a basement remodel, replacing an aging pump proactively is usually the smarter move. Newer models often come with built-in alarms and battery backups, which offer better reliability and a lot less worry. MAS Plumbing’s team of licensed 5-star plumbers are ready to serve you. Call 630-924-0665 to schedule an appointment.
